Lexica (Wikimedia)

Lexica is a mobile-first tool to simplify microcontributions to lexicographical data on Wikidata.

2025

Lexica is a mobile-first tool to simplify microcontributions to lexicographical data on Wikidata. Wikidata is the free knowledge graph for many Wikimedia projects (such as Wikipedia), allowing contributors to enrich lexicographical data by linking Lexemes to Items, adding script variants, and providing hyphenation data.

Wikicollabs led the full product development cycle, from defining the vision, designing the UI/UX and user flow, to managing sprints, writing technical specs, and conducting user testing. The process included collaboration with the lexicographical data community, incorporating feedback from contributors to make sure the tool met their real needs.

This work supports Wikimedia Deutschland’s broader effort to decentralize software development within the Wikimedia movement by growing technical capacity in the Global South. Wikicollabs, based in Indonesia, is one of the initiative’s key partners. The project is funded by the Arcadia Philanthropic Fund as part of the Software Collaboration for Wikidata program. All source code is published under an open license and maintained on GitHub.

How Dihardja Software helps?

Our team at Dihardja Software worked closely with the local team of Wikicollabs to provide engineering capacity for the project. Based on the designs and technical specifications provided, we focused on building the frontend and backend that can deliver an accessible and user-friendly experience for contributors of all levels.

  • Developing the frontend using Vue.js and Wikimedia Codex design systems to ensure a responsive and intuitive user interface
  • Building the backend with Node.js, MariaDB and deploying it to Wikimedia Toolforge for ease of maintainability within Wikimedia environment
  • Integration with Wikidata API for live editing and entity queries
  • Ensuring mobile accessibility for contributors editing on the go
  • Supporting multilingual content and accommodating script directionality for broader language inclusion
